New Perth Airport Master Plan delivers jobs and growth for WA

Perth Airport’s plan to bring all flight services into a central aviation hub will see the airport more than double its annual contribution to the WA economy to $9 billion by 2040.

The new economic analysis by independent modellers Acil-Allen also reveals that by 2040, Perth Airport will be generating around 37,000 aviation and non-aviation jobs.

The analysis forms part of Perth Airport’s Preliminary Draft Master Plan 2020 which will be released for public comment on 24 July 2019.

Perth Airport plans to invest around $2.5 billion over the coming decade to upgrade its international terminal, construct a new parallel runway, and build a new terminal to allow Qantas to move from the outdated Terminal 3-4 building by the end of 2025.

The predicted impact of this investment program includes:

Perth Airport’s annual contribution to the WA economy will surge from $3.6 billion in 2018 to $9.0 billion in 2040, an increase of around 150 per cent,
Aviation and non-aviation job numbers generated by the airport will more than double from around 16,700 in 2018 to 37,700 in 2040,
- annual passenger numbers will nearly double to 28.5 million,
- annual aircraft movements will grow to 202,000 movements, and
- domestic and international air freight could grow to 383,000 tonnes.

Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said the economic benefits to Western Australia from bringing all airline services into the one central location are enormous.

“The consolidation of the airport into one central precinct serviced by two parallel runways has been in planning documents since the 1970s,” Mr Brown said.

“We’ve already invested $1 billion to bring regional airlines to Terminal 2 in 2013 and construct a new home for Virgin Australia in T1 domestic in 2015.

“At the same time, taxpayers have made significant investments in the Gateway Road project and the Forrestfield Airport Link, all based on the understanding that all airlines would be operating in the central terminal precinct.

“The economic analysis contained in the Master Plan document shows the huge gains for the Western Australian economy when we successfully transition Qantas from the old, outdated terminals to a new home in the central precinct.

“We are already working with Qantas on the design and planning of the new terminal. Perth Airport remains committed to delivering a world class terminal by 2025.

“We believe we can deliver these investments in a timely manner to allow our airline partners to grow while at the same time giving our passengers a high-quality travel experience,” Mr Brown said.

“The community has embraced the new T1 Domestic terminal where Virgin Australia operates, and it is considered to be the best terminal experience in Australia.

“Terminal 3 and 4 are both reaching their use-by dates and simply cannot deliver that same level of service for the public or efficiency for our airline partners.

“An important part of the Master Plan process is our public engagement. We are committed to a transparent and effective community engagement process for the Master Plan.”

“We want the community to understand and be a part of what we are doing because it is going to change the face of Perth Airport.

Public Comment

The Preliminary Draft Master Plan 2020 is now out for public comment for a period of 60 business days. The community can visit our Airport Experience Centre or attend one of our public information sessions where we will be available to answer questions about our plans.
