Important security update - international travellers

29 June, 2018
As part of the Commonwealth Government security requirements, all international departing flights will now have restrictions in place limiting inorganic powders to volumes less than 350ml/350gm per passenger in the aircraft cabin.

Passengers will also be required to present all powders in their carry-on baggage separately for screening.

The new measures will be implemented across all Australian airports, including Perth Airport from midnight tonight.

The first impacted flight departing Perth Airport is EK 425.

Perth Airport Chief Corporate Services Officer Debra Blaskett said if you travel with powders in your carry-on baggage, you should expect changes to the way you are screened at the airport.

“There are already similar quantity restrictions on liquids, aerosols and gels in carry-on luggage.

“As with liquids, aerosols and gels, powders will need to be presented at security check-points so they can be screened separately.

“These restrictions do not apply to your checked baggage carried in the hold of the aircraft,” Ms Blaskett said.

“Security measures, including the new restrictions on inorganic powders are in place to ensure the safety and security of all travellers, and we appreciate the travelling public’s understanding as we implement the new measures at Perth Airport,” Ms Blaskett said.

Inorganic powders include salt, sand and talcum powder which are now limited to 350ml. Organic powders such as food, powdered baby formula, coffee, sugar is not restricted, but must be separated from the rest of your carry-on baggage for X-ray screening.

Further details about powders, liquid, aerosol and gel restrictions and how they need to be presented at the screening point, can be found at the Australian Government’s Travel Secure website.
