Costco is coming to the West
The new Costco will be a massive 14,000m2 of building area – more than three times the size of a normal supermarket, and will include an Optical Centre, Hearing Aid Centre, Tyre Centre, and a petrol station.
Perth Airport Chief Corporate Services Officer Debra Blaskett said Costco would revolutionise shopping in Perth.
“Costco delivers thousands of products – from day-to-day groceries to clothing and electronics - at heavily discounted prices for its members,” Ms Blaskett said.
“Costco needed somewhere that could provide space for their warehouse with connectivity to freight routes, and still be close and accessible to the shopping public from across Perth.
“Perth Airport ticked all those boxes. The new Costco will be just off Tonkin Highway, adjacent to the new DFO and close to the new Redcliffe rail station.
“Costco’s decision to invest at the Airport West Retail Park is a huge vote of confidence in Perth Airport and the WA economy.
“This $55 million project will generate up to 200 jobs during construction with up to 275 retail jobs created when it becomes operational.”
Costco Australia Managing Director Patrick Noone said the retail giant had been wanting to come to Western Australia for some time now but needed to find the right home.
“We know the public have been waiting for this decision and we’re thrilled to let them know that Costco is on its way,” Mr Noone said.
“Costco is coming to Perth and that means big savings for families on groceries, electronics, furniture, petrol, and a huge range of other products.
“We keep our costs down so we can pass on the savings to our members and we believe Western Australians are going to embrace this new way of shopping.
“We are going to change Perth’s retail habits: it’s not a shopping trip to Costco, it’s a shopping experience.
“Perth Airport is the obvious place for us to invest given its proximity to the CBD, the great transport links, and the way it is growing into a consumer-focussed retail hub.”
Perth Airport Chief Commercial Officer Steven Holden said the Costco commitment underlined the increasing strategic importance of Perth Airport as a commercial precinct.
“The non-aviation development of the Perth Airport estate is delivering significant benefits to Perth through new investment and new jobs,” Mr Holden said.
“Despite the slowdown of the WA economy, Perth Airport has been able to attract new projects by focussing on the needs of commercial organisations and building on the obvious advantages of our location.
“Costco will be a welcome addition to the Airport West Retail Park which will be situated next to the DFO, creating one of Perth’s premium destination retail locations. We are confident other major projects will soon follow their lead.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2019, subject to planning approvals, and the warehouse is expected to open in 2020.
Costco is a membership warehouse, dedicated to offering high quality products at the best possible price. Customers will be able to purchase everything from fresh food and white goods to jewellery and watches.
