Students branch out at Perth Airport

“Perth Airport is strongly committed to environmental management and sustainability, and we undertake a number of activities throughout the year to protect local water and soil resources and reduce the impact of airport activities on the environment,” said Fiona Lander, Executive General Manager External Affairs, Perth Airport.

“Tree planting is an important aspect of our ongoing environmental strategy and it is fantastic to have the continued support and involvement of 13 local primary and five secondary schools,” said Ms Lander.

More than 16,000 native trees, shrubs and sedges are being planted as part of the Living Stream Project on the Perth Airport estate by students.             

“It’s important that our students develop an understanding of the importance of sustainability at a young age,” said Aaron Chaplin, Principal Edney Primary School, High Wycombe.

“The opportunity to participate in Perth Airport’s Tree Planting Program is a great way for students to learn about the unique flora and fauna on the airport estate,” he said. 

In addition to the tree planting, students are also learning about threatened native animals and control of feral predators through the Department of Parks and Wildlife’s Nearer to Nature Program.

“We hope that through the students’ participation, they gain an appreciation of their local environment and the complexity of the ecosystems in and around Perth Airport,” said Ms Lander.
